You’ve seen the words on motivational posters and Facebook memes – “live your dreams,” “change your world,” “build something awesome!” While the intent is good, they’re light on substance. “Live your dreams” might be a worthy idea, but what does it mean, and how do you get there?
It’s even more important in business, because your dreams are real goals you’re trying to reach. You created a business out of nothing, so you’ve already accomplished something amazing. Now it’s time to take that energy, continue applying it, and put steps in place to make your business magnificent.
Let’s look at how to do just that. It’s a simple step-by-step process:
- Get into the right mindset.
- Think about what you want to accomplish.
- Prioritize your goals.
- Break things down.
- Do the work.
- Review and revise.
- Continue to dream.
Get into the right mindset
You created your business to accomplish something. That could simply be to make you some money, but it’s often more than that. For many entrepreneurs, it goes deeper – a sense of pride, shared values, wanting to create change, the power of technology and innovation. Whatever it is that motivated you to start a business in the first place, that’s the fire you need when you’re thinking about your dreams.
You’re going to be tapping into that, thinking about the change you want to see. That’s what goals are – our dreams made into tangible things. It’s about moving you and your business from where you are to where you want to be. Get into the right mindset, where what you do has the power to create something lasting and inspirational.
Think about what you want to accomplish
Now you’re in the right mindset, you’re going to start thinking about and writing down your goals. Think about where you want your business to be in a year, three years, five years. What changes will it make in the world, what types of products and services will you be creating, how big will your business be, what will people think about when they hear your business name?
Don’t be afraid to think big – write down where you want to be, the goals you want to accomplish. Use specific language – rather than say, “I want to have more products and services,” say, “I want to launch two new products in the next year: A and B.”
Prioritize your goals
Go through each of your goals and the time periods you want to accomplish each of them in. For each time period, pick the one or two goals you most want to achieve – the things that would make you happiest and your business most successful. These are what you’re going to build.
Break things down
Go through each of the goals you have and break it down into milestones and phases. Think to yourself, “What’s the very next thing I need to do to move this forward?” It doesn’t matter how tiny it is – you’re building a plan to make your goals happen.
Do the work
Now for the hard part. Every day – and I mean every day – do one thing that moves you toward your goal. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is; what matters is that you build a habit and a momentum to get you where you need to be. The next day, do the same thing. Again and again.
Review and revise
Stop periodically and look at what you’ve accomplished. Think about what you still need to do, but also look back and see how far you’ve come. You can see the progress you’re making toward your goals, which will give you the energy and inspiration to keep going. Pretty soon, you’ll achieve what you set your mind to.
Continue to dream
As you accomplish your goals, look at the next things you want to achieve. Keep dreaming and keep moving. Every day you’re building success and creating the changes you need. You are “building something awesome.”
Remember, to live your dreams, you have to do the work.
